With coverage of sex, relationships, beauty, celebrities, politics, and social issues, there is little Cosmopolitan has not touched. The magazine’s strength is in its unabashed tone and content; expletives and taboos are a regular occurrence within Cosmo’s pages. Now, with a young editor-in-chief and strong marketing tactics aimed towards Millennials and Gen Z, Cosmopolitan speaks for a generation of young women.

Sumanth Prabhaker has been wearing different hats for every job he’s ever had—from running his graduate school magazine to opening his own small press, Madras Press. Now, Sumanth works as lead editor at Orion, a nature magazine with a unique focus on human interactions with Mother Earth. Sumanth, the first person of color in a position of leadership at Orion, feels there are expectations he must fulfill; we touched base over Zoom to discuss how, ultimately, they are expectations he’s been prepared for simply by saying yes to every opportunity.
