FAQ
What are your rates based on?
My rates have been calculated based on my education, prior experience, previous pay rates, and industry standards.

Is there anything you won't edit?
My specialties are fiction novels (especially YA) and academic essays/research articles (NOT journal articles - think magazine or newspaper articles). I work best with novel-type books that follow a definable story arc (or that need help finding one!). I will copyedit and proofread most written works.
I am not qualified to developmentally or line edit academic works (textbooks, theses, journal articles, etc.), children's picture books, or poetry. I will not work with: erotica, niche science fiction, conservative/right-leaning materials, or any works that portray homophobia, transphobia, queerphobia, sexism, racism, and/or other discrimination towards historically oppressed identities.

What happens after I contact you about my project?
I will read your submission and accept or reject the project within 48 hours. If accepted, I will request a copy of your manuscript to review in order to calculate your estimate. I will have an estimate prepared within the next 3-5 business days once I receive your manuscript. After that, we will review the editing contract, set a start and finish date, and you will pay a non-refundable deposit upon signing.

How does payment work?
For Developmental and Line edits:
A non-refundable deposit (set based on the estimated total cost of your project, usually approximately 30-50% of the final cost) will be paid upon signing the contract. The deposit will be deducted from the final cost. The remainder of the cost will be calculated based on the final project cost, calculated as: (hours worked x the hourly rate) - deposit

For Copyediting and Proofreading:
A non-refundable deposit of 50% of the total cost of the project (calculated as: word count x rate per word) will be paid upon signing the contract. The deposit will be deducted from the final cost. The remaining 50% will be charged upon completion of the project.

Please note that I expect payments within 48 hours of sending invoices. I do not return completed manuscript edits until I receive the full cost of the service provided.

Why do you charge a non-refundable deposit?
The deposit is a professional agreement to fulfill the expectations of the project on both of our ends. Deposits are an assurance that you are serious about editing your project - and I am serious about being your editor! Non-refundable deposits also protect me if an author decides to back out, say, midway through editing a 500-page novel. I still am compensated for the time that I worked despite the author ending the agreement early.

How do you accept payments?
Currently, I send invoices and accept payments only through PayPal. Venmo can be used as a backup.

What if something happens and I need to cancel editing my project?
Things happen - I get it. Contact me as soon as you decide to cancel the editing project. Though deposits are non-refundable, I am considerate of individual situations. Just be open and communicate with me and I'll help in any way I can.
